Unless you know a lot about roofs, it’s tough to know when you may need a new one before it’s too late and water is suddenly pouring through your ceiling, causing a whole host of other problems. Below are 5 warning signs to look for that will signal you need a new roof on your house before it becomes a truly costly problem.
General Age
When was the roof last replaced? If it’s close to 20 years or more, you need a new roof. Most roofs last on average 20 to 25 years and even though some could theoretically go beyond that, it’s not worth the risk to test the physical longevity of older roofing structures.
Shingles are Curling
If you notice the shingles on your roof are curling and / or buckling, then that is a good sign your roof is due for replacement. It means they are moving well past their life expectancy and are falling apart due to wear and tear from the elements or they are defective. Start replacement immediately.
Missing Shingles
If shingles are missing from the roof itself, it means the roof could be caving in or falling apart due to age. You can notice this happening by just looking at the roof and seeing where shingles are missing or some shingles look thicker than the others.
Shingle Granules Everywhere
If you are finding shingle granules all around the roof, like in the gutters or the areas just off the roof after a decent rain, then it may mean the roof is beginning to come apart quickly and replacement is in your near future. The darker the granules, the more immediate the replacement will need to happen.
Daylight Visible
If you can go up into the attic and see daylight coming through the roof boards, then that means the roof is in need of replacement and it has been worn down significantly.
