How Often Should I Clean my Gutters?

Your home's gutters play an important role in the well-being and integrity of your home. Their main purpose is to redirect rainwater off your roof and deposit it away from your foundation to keep groundwater from seeping into your home. Your gutters need to be regularly maintained to work properly as they can easily get clogged with pine needles, leaves, and other debris. When gutters are blocked, water does not flow freely and can even seep up underneath the edges of your roof, causing moisture damage and wood rot. Your foundation can also be affected by water damage since the rain water would not be correctly routed away from your home.

How often should I clean my gutters?

You should clean your gutters at least twice a year. This is a relatively inexpensive service to order from any local contractor. The best time to schedule cleanings is after a season change. You should ideally clean your gutters after all the leaves have been deposited in autumn and after all the flowers and seeds have fallen in late spring. Cleaning biannually assures that your gutters are getting regular care and are routing rainwater properly. Also, if your gutters are looking quite dirty in between these regular cleanings, it would be wise to schedule an extra cleaning.

Can I clean them myself?

Without the proper safety tools, you should leave this job to a professional. If you would like to make gutter cleaning a DIY project, then make sure you have the correct ladder, a gutter scoop, garden hose, and follow known safety protocols. Keeping your gutters clean is a small expense that will prevent costly foundation or roof repairs in your future. However, it must be done properly to make sure the job has been done well and that you stay safe in the process.
